    Auto Masters Explains Spark Plugs

    Last updated 6 days ago

Perhaps you are looking to learn more about cars and have always wanted to know what spark plugs actually are. Whether or not you are a car fanatic it’s always a good idea to understand the basic mechanics of a vehicle you intend on driving. This article by Auto Masters gives you a basic break down on Spark Plugs.

Spark Plugs are the least expensive operating part in your engine but are also one of the most important. They have an important task to perform in your engine. They produce an electrical spark that ignites the mixture of fuel and air in you engine's combustion chambers, causing the pistons to move up and down. This movement of pistons is what ultimately gets your car's wheels moving, so this little spark is a critical part of the whole process; it initiates the combustion in your internal combustion engine.

As you can see spark plugs are a crucial part in your engine, therefore it is absolutely essential that they are maintained.

Not sure how to change or check your spark plugs? Speak to us at Auto Masters by calling 1300 619 267 and book in a time for one of our experts to check it out for you.

Automasters: How Often Does A Clutch Need Replacing

    Last updated 8 days ago

When do I need to replace my clutch? is a question we are often asked at Automasters, here we will provide  some answers to this common issue.

    What is a Clutch?

A clutch is a mechanical device which enables two revolving shafts to be joined and disconnected within your car. The clutch allows you to transmit the power from the engine to the gearbox within a vehicle.

    Problems

The most common problem is that the friction material wears out. The clutch has material similar to the brake pads to create the friction required to transfer the power from the engine to the wheels.  The wearing away of this material can cause slipping and eventually prevent transmission taking place.

    Diagnosing The Problem.

If you suspect you have an issue with your clutch you can perform your own diagnostic on your clutch by:

    1. Starting your car, pull the handbrake and put the car in neutral
    2. Listen for a growling noise without pushing the clutch in.
    3. Begin to push the clutch and again listen for a chirping noise.
    4. Push the clutch all the way to the floor and listen this time for a squealing noise.

If you hear a growling noise at stage 1 it is likely to be a transmission problem. If the chipping noise appears at stage 3, it is likely the clutch release, or throw out bearing which has an issue.  If you hear the squealing noise at stage 4, it is likely the pilot bearing or bushing.

If you do not hear any of these noises then the problem is probably not with the clutch. We would advise that you always consult an expert.

How Long Should The Clutch Last

Clutches do succumb to everyday wear and tear and it is common for a clutch to be repaired or replaced before a car reaches the end of its lifespan. However the best way of looking after your clutch is to try and drive as smoothly as possible. This means trying not to downshift gears while you’re at high RPM.  Also try not to use your clutch when you don’t need to, for example using it to keep the car still while sitting at a traffic light or by riding the clutch to control car speed.

However if you look after the clutch it should last for 50,000 miles or 80,000 kilometres

The Importance of Having Your Car Serviced With a Reputable Garage

    Last updated 20 days ago

If you're hoping for a fair price and good quality car service, it can be worth your while comparing several different garages in your area and finding out what's included in their services.

What to Look For in a Garage

If you're new to driving or you've moved to a new area, it's a good idea to find a reputable garage in the vicinity before you need it, as you may be more likely to make the wrong decision when under time pressure and faced with serious car repairs.

There are numerous things you should look for when evaluating a garage, including its local reputation - which can be found out by asking around your circle of friends and family members for recommendations - and checking which automotive associations the garage belongs to. A warranty can be considered an essential component of car services and repairs too, as you will need some security that you will be financially covered in the event that further work needs to be done.

    Saving money on car repairs

Price isn't the only factor to consider when comparing garages, but it's always important to save money whenever you can. One effective way of saving money on your car repairs is to buy replacement parts yourself, rather than paying for replacements as part of your service that may be more expensive.

Shock Absorbers - What They Are, And How They Can Be Damaged

    Last updated 22 days ago

Shock absorbers are important for the safe running of your car and avoiding damage to vital components, and you should have them serviced or replaced as soon as you spot any signs of problems.

Your car's shock absorbers help to limit excessive movement of the car as well as absorbing energy from impacts that could cause serious damage to car parts as well as discomfort to drivers and passengers. The most common type of shock absorbers are spring-based, though most cars also use hydraulic shock absorbers. Drivers who become used to their cars over time are usually able to tell if there is a problem with suspension that could be traced to the vehicle's shock absorbers.

This video from Car Parts Direct instructs motorists on how to check their shock absorbers for signs of damage or disrepair, which can present a hazard for braking, steering and handling of vehicles. If you feel your car is tilting slightly to one side, or not coming to rest correctly, you will first need to determine whether this is a problem with shock absorbers or can be traced to another part of your car, such as abnormal tyre wear.

If your vehicle is lying low, you can test the function of coil springs and suspension by making your vehicle bounce – ideally by standing outside the car and pushing down on the bonnet as far as you can, then monitoring the way your car bounces back. In normal conditions, the car should bounce up beyond its rest point before immediately stopping once the rest point is reached.
